Animals captured after breaking free from circus and running around Philadelphia

The streets of Philadelphia became a circus after two zebras broke loose and ran through the city.

The zebras escaped from the UniverSoul Circus outside the Mann Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday afternoon, and dashed through the streets of West Philadelphia, giving plenty of neighbors a free look at the exotic animals.

"Yo look at this zebra!," Twitter user @ddyer_ wrote, with a video he recorded from his car as the equine dashed across the street and past his window. The video was later deleted.  More

Kitten Rescued From Dumpster, Frozen In Paint And Concrete

FARGO, North Dakota - Construction workers in Fargo made a heartbreaking discovery after hearing a desperate “meow” coming from inside a dumpster.

A kitten had been left there for days, and what’s worse, it was frozen in concrete and paint.

The kitten, now named Kelly, is only a few weeks old, but has already been through more than most cats.

“I don’t know how the cat would climb up a six-foot dumpster and get in,” the kitten’s new owner Kelly said.  More

Man in underpants attacks French bird activists with shovel

France - Members of a French bird protection group were attacked by a man in his underwear wielding a shovel after they discovered finch traps on a plot of land in southern France.

In a series of images, a man dressed in a t-shirt and underpants can be seen attacking members of the LPO (Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux, or “Bird Protection League”), including the group’s president Allain Bougrain-Dubourg.

The incident happened on Monday as the activists investigated a farm in Audon, south-western France. They were accompanied by journalists to highlight a number of illegal finch traps on the property, according to the organisation.  More

A cat cafe — are you kidding me?

If you're wondering what a cat cafe is, you're not alone. But it turns out it's pretty much what you probably think it is: a place for seemingly well-paid hipsters to pay other hipsters money to hang out with cats — and in the case of a D.C. cat cafe, $15 an hour.

Yes, you read that right: $15 dollars an hour to hang out with cats.

Cats you may or may not even get to interact with depending on the mood of the cat. It'll be just like any other cafe, only with cats. And you're paying to sit there.

For about twice the amount of minimum wage. There will likely be snacks, of course, but you can't eat them around the cats, and wine, which you can't drink around the cats, and probably a kitchen, which will be separated from the cats and their many litter boxes.  More

Special 'werewolf' kitten breed is taking over the Internet

Feeling super spooky this winter and want a cat to match?

A feline breed that looks just like a werewolf could be the perfect companion. Photos of the unique-looking Lykoi cat have been making the rounds online, bolstered by attention during Halloween.

A little about the cats:

The Lykoi cats (the name is an ancient Greek word for "wolf") are a natural mutation from domestic shorthairs that started from two separate sibling litters in 2011, according to the International Cat Association breed standard.  More

Woman is first Alaskan veterinarian with own reality show

Dr. Dee Thornell bought the first heated surgery table in the state of Alaska — for animals. But as a veterinarian with an animal hospital in Fairbanks, she doesn’t always get to use that table. She’s just as likely to be flying to some remote location, performing surgery using a church pew, pool table or truck bed.

Thornell is also the first veterinarian from Alaska with her own reality television show. Animal Planet’s “Dr. Dee, Alaska Vet,” debuted Saturday.

Some of the show is filmed in the wild. The rest comes from her practice — which she calls Animal House. It includes a large, modern animal hospital, a Montessori dog training school, a laundry, groomer, retail store and the latest addition, a crematorium.  More

Stranger Buys Stolen Puppy From Craigslist, Returns It to Owner

A stolen puppy found his way home thanks to a kind stranger and social media.

Ziggy was stolen from a crate in his front yard in Fresno, Calif., on Friday, owner Kris Villasenor told ABC News today. A stranger’s act of kindness reunited the white Maltese with his family the next day.

“I was browsing Facebook the other day and my aunt shared a post about a lost dog,” Jeremiah Lee told ABC News. “I read it and realized that the dog was stolen in my neighborhood.”  More

It takes teamwork to save kitten from storm drain

CLAYTON, N.C. — A student, a teacher, animal control officers and firefighters combined efforts on a rainy Monday morning to rescue a kitten from a Clayton storm drain.

Sara Tolley and her son, 4-year-old son Camden, heard the kitten's cries as they walked to his preschool at Horne Memorial United Methodist Church.

Camden asked his teacher to call police. Clayton Animal Control Officer Angela Lee responded to the call and knew she needed the help of the Town of Clayton Fire Department.  More

Adria Amos: Veterinarian offers holistic care to animals large and small

When Dr. Cheryl Cross took a veterinary acupuncture class in 2007 so she could help relieve her dog’s pain due to a knee injury, she had no idea it would change the course of her career. The class was the first step in Cross’ discovery of the benefits of holistic, sometimes called integrative, veterinary care.

“Acupuncture, herbal support, supplements, diet, manual therapies like massage provide other opportunities to support the patient, treat pain, help when there really aren’t any other avenues,” she said.

Recently, the veterinarian opened a private practice in Bearden’s River Dog Bakery offering holistic services for local animals. More

Is Your Pet Wrecking Your Sleep?

We hate to break it to you, but Spot may be depriving you of shut-eye, big-time. According to a recent Mayo Clinic study, 18 percent of pet owners felt that their animal disturbed their slumber. But the actual numbers are likely higher.

“I think many people don’t want to admit that their cat or dog interrupts their sleep, because they’re intensely loyal to their animals,” says study co-author Lois Krahn, MD, professor of psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic Sleep Disorder Center.

Oregon guard dogs 'adopt' orphaned kitten

MT. VERNON, Ore. – Two large female guard dogs living with a family in the tiny Grant County town of Mt. Vernon have "adopted" an orphaned kitten.

Dog owner Tiffany Hull said about six weeks ago one of the females, a kelpie mix named Chaos, brought a kitten in her mouth from the family's backyard. Though Chaos is a hunter – she has killed chipmunks and birds – the kitten was unharmed.

Hull's boyfriend put the kitten back on the other side of the fence, where he thought the kitten's mother might live. But later that night, the dog brought another kitten – and friends of the family took it home. More

A warning for cat owners: a popular cat treat is being recalled because it could contain a dangerous chemical.

The Blue Buffalo Company is recalling some of its Blue Kitty Yums Cat Treats. The chicken recipe is the only one affected.

Sterilization can prevent pyometra

By Lawrence Gerson V.M.D.

I saw my first pet sterilization when I was in high school and working for a veterinarian at the Schenley Park Animal Hospital. My memories are vivid. The procedure commonly known as a spay is really an ovariohysterectomy. The ovaries and uterus are commonly removed to prevent unwanted heat and pregnancy, but the procedure also prevents mammary tumors and pyometra.

Pyometra is a uterine infection that is seen in dogs and cats after estrus. Four to 12 weeks after a heat cycle, animals who are not pregnant can start to act sick. It is estimated that 25 percent of pets who are not spayed may develop pyometra as they age.

Common signs of pyometra can include vaginal discharge and excessive water drinking and urination. Tests show that white blood cell counts increase dramatically. More

Officials search for missing pet cobra in Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The 5-foot snake was last seen crossing a Florida road.

That was according to a call placed to 911 Friday afternoon by a driver, alerting state wildlife officials to the possibility that a cobra was on the loose in Lee County.

Since about 2 p.m. Friday, the FWC and volunteers have been scouring the brush that lines the road in Buckingham, said Officer Stuart Spoede of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.  More

Picking the right pet food

You want to do what's best for your pet, but it's not always easy to know what to feed them. There are so many choices, so many brands and so many labels competing for your attention.

Where do you start?

Look for the AAFCO label from the Association of American Feed Control Officials.

If the label says "complete and balanced” that means the product has all the recognized, required nutrients in the proper proportions, when fed appropriately. More
